Hi Rick,
I'd have to say you are correct. We first got an overview of our assets in a way that was very inclusive (if we weren't sure, we listed it as an asset). Then we had several conceptual brainstorming exercises to dream up new ways of using those assets. I do think we would have had a lot harder time trying to "ask" people what their needs were. Instead we saw the challenge as doing the most with the data and equipment we had, which turned out to be what was really needed after all.

Because you already had most of what you needed to get this done in house, but did not know it until your brought everyone together, it seems like the starting point for creativity was discovery, then collaboration.

I agree, Amy. We all have to be responsible in this world of "mass collaboration" and make an effort to not believe everything we read, but rather use the tools we have to verify and substantiate truth.

These are without any doubt the the people who wrote the U.S. Constitution protected the rights of the press. They could not have perceived technology like we have today, but they did perceive the need for an active media fact checking information. Now it's a bit more complicanted but still possible, as you have shown.

Maybe at some point, but right now I like to treat this like Professor Dumbledore's pensive - a place to record my thoughts and rare moments of clarity about IT maturity.

Cool web. Maybe you should try to monetize it with
http://tiny.cc/05mrc
They do have 40 days cookie duration and they pay 10-15% commisions. They'll match ads based on search query of your visitors and display relevant ads on you blog.

Thanks for the complement. I use this blog as a chance to make observations about current things in the world of information technology using the experiences of the last 30 years. I think the IT industry as a whole loves to look forward as if there was never anything to be learned from the past. We tend to discard old practices and processes like we discard old computers and printers. This is a mistake, in my opinion, as best-practices are things that mature and stand the test of time. But it keeps consultants in business, so I guess I shouldn't complain!
